Well, not as dumb as this truck , but pretty dumb. I did a quick 5,000 mile service on my ‘91 Corolla: oil change, tire rotation, brake inspection. Almost finished, starting to rain, and I started the engine whilst I ran around snugging the lugnuts. When I got back to the front, I discovered that I’d left the filler cap off and I’d showered the underhood area — and the driveway in front of the car — with fresh motor oil. Probably the better part of half a quart. Lovely. I ignored the environmental disaster sign at the car wash and pressure washed the affected regions with soapy water, which helped a lot, but DUMB! Never done that before and I’ve probably done 100 oil changes in my lifetime.

Eh...it happens
As for the truck, I always wonder if after market wheels affect the towing and hauling rating at all...

Most likely but I doubt the manufacturer did any testing to quantify the loses. Probably a blanket statement about how they don’t warrant anything.

I assume they would. I doubt they’re LT-rated...

Even highly skilled experienced pros do it. Don't feel too bad.

In this particular case, we got what we paid for. I am normally very meticulous about preventive maintenance, but I got in a rush because of the weather.
On the Corolla, one of the cam gears is right at the oil fill hole and it slung the oil out very effectively.

Our diesel V6 is like that. Somehow people will occasionally put the cap on crooked. Then they come in a while later for an oil leak or burning smell, and it's because there's 4 liters of oil dumping over the whole thing. Real tough to clean up.

I put an oil filter on and didn't realize the gasket from the old filter was stuck on the mounting surface. That made a mess

I know. If I could have gone somewhere and paid $50 to use a proper heated water pressure washer for 5 minutes, I would have.
